What would network communication be without the Data Link layer?

Data Link ( Data Link ) without the layer, network communication becomes quite complex and irregular and causes many problems. The absence of this layer can cause the following problems:

No Addressing: Without the Data Link layer, there is no address defined between the devices on the network. This makes it difficult to determine how any data transmission will reach the target device. To communicate, each device had to know the address of each other device.

No Error Control: Errors may occur during data transmission, and reliability issues may arise in communication without a mechanism for detecting or correcting these errors. Incorrect data packets are transmitted and received, which seriously compromises data integrity.

Data Irregularity: Without the Data Link layer, it is more difficult to transmit data in a regular format. The data is transmitted uncertainly and unstablely, making communication erroneous and unpredictable.

No Framing: Without the Data Link layer, frames that regulate the transmission of data are not created. This creates uncertainty about how data is split and not transmitted.

Conflict Problems: In some networks, conflicts (collision) may occur if multiple devices try to send data at the same time. In the absence of a Data Link layer, conflict detection and management cannot be performed.

Network Security Deficiency: The Data Link layer plays an important role for network security and can include security measures such as authentication, authorization, and encryption. The lack of this layer can greatly weaken network security.

As a result, network communication becomes complex, unreliable and irregular without the Data Link layer. Therefore, the presence of this layer in computer networks is critical to the regulation and reliability of data transmission. Thanks to this layer, data transmission is carried out more safely and efficiently.
